While both patents and intellectual property rights guarantee a party ownership of both physical or intangible assets, intellectual property law provides a significantly wider range of use. Additionally, unlike patents, where time limitations dissolve a parties rights after a period of time, legitimately established intellectual property rights do not expire; though some individuals, and even some nations (i.e. China) fail to respect intellectual property rights such as copyright laws. And while both patents and intellectual property law are extremely important to the success of business industries, not to mention there is some overlap between the two, intellectual property pertains to intangible assets artistically created by the mind. The impact of the internet's evolution on intellectual property assets, specifically the music industry, and continual internet piracy a severe intellectual property injustice, further the severe necessities of intellectual property. While critics may claim patents in various industries are of a much greater necessity because they pertain to tangible assets and are necessary for even the most simplistic society, intellectual property is a creation within one's mind. In present day America, the frequency of intellectual property law in countless industries, allows for the endless creativity of the imagination to generate assets within the most civilized nations.
