Some how it is obvious. Historically, linguistically and socially chinese language influenced japanese language. Japanese is using a lot of ideograms coming from chinese, in a simplified manner.
Even for a novice it is quite easy to remark the differences between both character sets (visually, the chinese has a complex representation, instead japanese is not so elaborated), therefore to determine probabilistically which one is older.
