Contagions seem easier to contract--pick up from anything around us. Infectious disease seems to me to be more specific in exposure before contracting the problem.

Because many pathogens are spread through infection by vectors such as rodents or insects. Vectors can not be controlled as easily as contagious humans, whose contact with uninfected humans can be restricted through quarantine and hygiene, such as hand-washing.
