Difference between Alpha Males and Beta Males
The role of alpha males in society is well known, and as obnoxious as they can sometimes be, that role is often an essential one even to this very day. Beta males are far less familiar to most people, and this comparison article seeks to clear the differences between both.
Definition
Alpha males are men that have a characteristically bold and competitive attitude. Typically brimming with confidence, "alpha males" are often referred to as charismatic and born leaders. Most tend to be overachievers, and their aggressiveness and competitiveness may cause others to view them in a negative light.
Beta males are men that are generally placed in a secondary position to alpha males. Noticeably less aggressive, their passiveness is also oftentimes viewed as a disadvantage.
Profile
Most alpha males tend to be intelligent, with a seemingly dangerous streak that gives them a sort of ruthlessness. These types of males are often found in "take charge" positions that require a great deal of mental and physical strength. In terms of relationships, most are widely regarded as being sexually dominating, although they display little interest in long-term relationships. Relationships with alpha males tend to be passionate affairs, although many surprisingly make good fathers and partners.
Beta males are often–though not always–good looking, and they are generally charming and easy to get along with. Although many can be quite strong and confident, they are definitely a second to alpha males. Beta males do tend to be more family-oriented, and may be found in a variety of positions, although always secondary to alpha males. Although some may make for good sexual partners, their reticence and passiveness always places them second to alpha males.
In Today's Society
To this day, alpha males remain constant characters in romance novels and movies. That being said, beta males have increasingly been placed in leading roles as well, perhaps as a reflection of their more acceptable statuses in today's society. Given the more independent and proactive women of the 21st century, the domineering and sometimes overbearing character traits of the alpha male isn't necessarily desirable, and beta males have since found themselves being pushed to the fore. While it is almost certain that alpha males will continue to hold the dominant roles that they have maintained in so many areas of society in the past, there is no denying that the field is wide open for beta males to grab a piece of their own turf…and be appreciated for it.
