Difference between Metal Gear and Splinter Cell

Metal Gear and Splinter Cell have to be two of the most action packed games around. Focusing primarily on armed combat in their own unique ways, each has attracted a core audience that is convinced of the supremacy of their choice over the other. Which game hits the mark? Let's see!

Profile

Metal Gear is a series of video games in the stealth genre created by Hideo Kojima. Developed and published by Konami, Metal Gear has the player in command of a Special Forces Operative that pits its collective skill against some form of the super weapon called "Metal Gear". This is in most cases, a tank that has nuclear capabilities and walks on two legs.

Splinter Cell is a stealth video game series produced with the cooperation of Tom Clancy. The game’s protagonist is a black-ops agent belonging to an NSA subdivision called the "Third Echelon".

Premise/Gameplay

Metal Gear’s main claim to fame is the introduction of the stealth genre in video gaming. It is also characterized by extended cinematic scenes, complex storylines, and coverage of various issues related to politics, warfare, and environmentalism, among others. The series also occasionally delves into philosophical themes.

Splinter Cell has the player taking on the role of Sam Fisher, an operative of an elite intelligence agency. In most of the games, the most efficient way to progress is to maintain stealth, avoid enemies by using less obvious routes, and diverting the attention of the guards. The game relies heavily on a combination of problem solving skills and precise action movements.

Reception

Metal Gear was honored with the 104th slot for best game for the Nintendo System in Nintendo Power's list of Top 200 Games. The Metal Gear series was a massively successful endeavor, having sold over 27 million copies by 2010.

Splinter Cell is no less successful, having sold more than 20 million units in its years of production. The series also received widespread acclaim upon its release, with Gamespot reviewer Greg Kasavin claiming that Splinter Cell has "the best lighting effects” in any video game. IGN was equally taken with the game's lighting as well as graphics, and both publications also had good things to say about the audio, particularly heaping praise on the selection of Michael Ironside as the voice actor behind Sam Fisher. Splinter Cell was awarded the Best Action/Adventure Game in the E3 2002 Game Critics Awards, and was praised for its "Excellence In Writing" at the 3rd Annual Game Developers Choice Awards. Finally, Splinter Cell was awarded the Console Game of the Year spot, and Outstanding Achievement in Game Play Engineering award at the 6th Annual Interactive Achievement Awards.
