Difference between Kickboxing and Boxing

Everybody is more or less cautious about their own safety and this is especially true in the streets. To avoid unwanted hazards or to feel confident in your ability to defend yourself against an attack by a stranger it may be a good idea to have some knowledge of self-defense. Kickboxing and boxing are types of training that can enable you to protect yourself. However it is not necessary to master in both of these. Let’s first differentiate between boxing and kickboxing. Continue reading to learn a little more about these two different types of defense.

Differences

As the name suggests we can say that kickboxing is a kind of boxing that uses hands and legs. It refers to the sport of kicking and punching and is an authenticated way of self defense and general fitness. While boxing is a type of combat sport, a boxer can only make use of their fists. Boxing is a popular sport and we can see this sport very often on television. Kickboxing can be of two types. One is full contact and the other is semi-contact type. It is more of a challenge to find a TV episode featuring kickboxing.

Techniques

The techniques adopted in boxing and in kickboxing are not same. In boxing, the prime techniques include stance, punch, defense, guard, etc. Punches can again be sub-divided into jab, cross, hook, uppercut and others. In kickboxing there are some additional techniques of leg. A few are front kick, side-kick, semi-circular kick, as well as some knee action. No matter the technique, one thing is common between them; you need to be very vigilant and cunning. This is because your opponent will always look for your weak point and strike you accordingly.

Personal Care

Safety is a vital concern in these games. Male boxers wear shorts and come bare-chested in full contact boxing, while female boxers need to wear chest protection along with wearing male protective gears and tank top. The complete setup of kickboxing protective gears include shin pads, kicking boots, helmet, mouth guard, boxing gloves and groin guard to name a few. There are few more precautions for the amateurs. It is required for them to have a headgear and a sleeveless shirt in the color of their corner. All these protective gears are to ensure safety of the competitors.

Summary

  • Kickboxing involves the use of both hand and leg while boxing allows the use of fists only.
  • Boxing is comparatively safer than kickboxing.
