giving their hunting, size and environment, the proteins in the venom have to be more efficient and faster acting than a land snake, I'm not sure about there evolution. although that might make sense why a water moccasin has a faster kill ratio, than a mainly land snake does. giving a land snake proteins they might not have to travel as far to get their meal, possibly.

I have a large pond on my property and have witnessed both breeds of snakes. The Moccasins are much more aggressive whether they feel intimidated or not. I have had water Moccasins come out of the water and come after me while fishing in my pond.
On the other hand the Copper heads will crawl away unless they feel threatened.

They are two in the same. Equally dangerous and should be avoided. Not a snake to be bitten by... lots of pain and tissue damage. Cottonmouth and Water Moccasin are the same snake.

Slightly more vein outs than the water moccasin.
  • Anonymous . 3+ yrs. ago
Moccasins like to stay in the water and Copperheads/Cottonmouths are more aggressive and hunt farther inland and not as much in the water.
  • Anonymous . 3+ yrs. ago
That is what the article was saying.
  • Anonymous . 3+ yrs. ago
I would say that it is due to the amount of bites from copper heads. 37% of all snake bites in the US are from copperheads, while both have cytotoxic venom and the moccasins venom is actually stronger they tend to dry bite while the copperhead pumps you full of venom
  • Anonymous . 3+ yrs. ago
Because of the shape of the head.

The reason I say this is that the cotton month blends with the leaves better then the water moccasin so you could be right up on it before you see it. Alot of the time when you see a water moccain it is in the water and you can see it water tail.
  • Anonymous . 3+ yrs. ago
