Friends is on about every "greatest shows of all time" list that is out there (time,tv guide, empire, just to name a few) it also won outstanding comedy series at the emmys. HIMYM will not even come close to the status of F.R.I.E.N.D.S. Friends was tvs most watched comedy 6 yrs in a row and remained #1 in its finale season, HIMYM cant even top two and a half men or the big bang theory in ratings.
how i met your mother is obviously inspired by friends. it has nothing new, it's like narrating the story of friends once again by a new narrator. i doesn't even make me laugh, at least not as much as friends used to do.

Because it's pretty much the father series of all other sitcoms centered around a group of friends, like HIMYM and debateably That 70's show, along with others like Happy Endings, and The New Girl. Although I HIMYM hilarious, Friends is the winner because it is original whereas HIMYM can be argued to have stole a lot of material from it. Also, if HIMYM ever runs out of ideas it could look to the Friends' plot for adivce or guidance and then just personalize it for themselves.

how i met your mother rips off friends on myriads of accounts. For example, Barney sleeps with Robin, Ted's long time crush, and the both has a huge fight and even lays off for a while. In Friends, Joey tells Ross he likes Rachel, Ross' long time crush, and the both has a fight. Both Ross and Ted are literally the professor intelligent archetype. Barney and Joey are the cliched womanizer character.
There are so much more. But upon comparing, my mind is now blown away.
The story of Friends is much more compelling for me and the jokes are not boring even after several times. But nevertheless I also like HIMYM!
The smartest and most talented people will admit that Friends is some of the best television-writing that has ever been done. When this fact is realized, can be stated that H.I.M.Y.M. is not the worst show, but cannot be compared with a show like Friends. The biggest problem is the predictable writing. I didn't like how you can lip-sync every other line without having ever watched the episode. The main character seems spineless and is impossible to sympathize emotions with. That destroys everything in this show, per se.

If you compare, it's quite obvious that How I Met Your Mother blatantly ripped off Friends in many ways. From basic characters (Ross and Ted, Joey and Barney), to plot lines (Group of friends (some met in college) all hang out in one restaurant in NYC, Ross-Rachel-Joey and Ted-Robin-Barney, two friends marry by another that officiates), to even minute details (Janice in Friends marries a deaf man which also happens to one of the group's ex's in HIMYM, both Phoebe and Ted have relatives with beach houses in Montague) HIMYM rips off Friends in nearly every way--it's almost as if the writer's watch various episodes to come up with jokes and details if they have any holes in their script. Don't get me wrong, I love both shows. I just cannot say, like most do nowadays, that HIMYM is better, because they simply edit the Friends episodes to make them more current, and play them up to a higher level (like Barney's misogynistic attitude is more intense than Joey's) so that people will relate to it more now. Obviously this isn't anything new, writers take inspiration from other shows all the time, but it's to such a degree that I just can't say it's a better show.

Television shows, whose sole purpose is to tell a story, are also one of the most profound ways to capture the feeling of the time, setting, culture, etc, that it is taking place in. FRIENDS did that in such an incredibly beautiful way. It totally captured the zeitgeist of it's era. It's nostalgic quality loved by it's fans holds so much power still because the show coincidently just happened to have been in the last distinguishable generation before the one we're currently in. Before everything became digital and the internet destroyed any sense of privacy and terrorists hijacked airplanes and killed thousands of completely innocent human beings. The only thing better than the actors' performances were the writing of the characters they played. All six of them could have had their own TV show, and every single one was lovable. You wanted them as your friends, and because the show lasted for so long, its almost as if they really were.
It's a classic. Each episode of Friends is funny and makes you feel good. HIMYM is becoming more of a drama and the comedy is not what it used to bei n the first two seasons.
Friends is the original show, everthing HIMYM might have is what thay found in Friends. Maybe they were able to make some little things work a bit better, BUT - and that´s the fact - they weren´t able to eben think of anything new. Friends is classic, Friends is fun and Friends is better

Well, How I met your mother is not bad show, but I prefer Friends.
First of all to me the most negative part of How I met your mother is the prolonged search of this mother. At the beginning I was interested, now I don't care who is the mother and I watch it only for fun, but the whole story just bugs me big time.
The second thing is that although Neil Patrick Harris is good actor, his character Barney annoys me. A lot more than Joey ever did. I just can't stand overacting, which is explicitly typical for Barney. Also I never got the chance to understand why for God's sake they are friends with Barney. If I were them, I would shut his mouth very frequently. The whole 'I'm awesome' just proves to me how not awesome he is. The most annoying part for me as a fan is to hear all the time from someone how cools he is. You have to let people decide this, not telling them constantly. And the pickup lines are just non realistic at all and insanely ridiculous in not a good way.
There are some better things in this series of course. I like Robin a lot more than I liked every female character in Friends. Maybe Monica has some similarities, but I prefer the first one.
On the other hand the chemistry and the story between Monica and Chandler as different people who fall in love is much more believable for me than the relationship between Barney and Robin. I don't get that at all. Mostly because I don't like Barney I guess, while Chandler was funny.
On the other hand I prefer Ted over Ross. Ted is more complicated character, has more flaws, which makes him realer. What I don't get why the creators of this show mocks at his profession. I don't see anything wrong in being architect and having some passion. Barney's passion to sleep with every bimbo is far more annoying than architecture.
Friends was iconic. I guess we should also consider the fact that I watched it first, so maybe I'm a bit biased.

I disagree with the view that HIMYM has better writing and acting than FRIENDS. I have watched HIMYM and FRIENDS many times and there are many scenes in HIMYM that were taken from FRIENDS. If plagiarizing and slight adaptation is what you call better writing, well then I would have nothing to say. As for acting, what proof is there that the FRIENDS cast have lesser acting antics as compared to the HIMYM cast? Don't get me wrong, I love the HIMYM cast but it's obvious who the winner is here: FRIENDS. In a time with no twitter or youtube to spread its cultural influence, FRIENDS was able to achieve greater success than HIMYM. In fact, taking a look at HIMYM, you will realize that it is basically Barney Stinson that gives the show laughter, on the contrary, every single character in FRIENDS has had numerous laugh-worthy scenes. Besides, major plots such as that of Ted's occupation change and jokes such as The Naked Man employed in HIMYM were all from FRIENDS. And when you quote in your article that MANY feel that HIMYM has better writing, who are the MANY people?

How I Met Your Mother is a great show but Friends surpass it all the way
in Friends, the energy, the feel-good vibes and the natural charisma of the actors is just a different level than anything else i've ever seen. I agree that how i met your mother may have better writing sometimes but it does not make up for the magic the cast of friends puts out. There is a reasons that the cast of Friends were treated like Roch stars during their heyday. When I watch friends i feel like i wish i could hang out with them.

It's funnier. There isn't a moment when I'm not laughing. David Schwimmer is also one of my favorite actors. I don't watch very much tv or movies but what I do watch, the characters he play are always one of my favorites in the movie or show (Ross is my favorite).
It's classic, and the humor isn't as grotesque as HIMYM is (at moments). The more recent comedy (both movies and shows) have gotten a little bit higher on the obnoxious scale.

Classic... This was the best show and although Barney is great The ensemble of Friends work better. I can watch Friends 1000 times but HIMYM gets irritating... Also some of Friends stuff is stolen by HIMYM.

I like both shows, HIMYM and Friends. I really like how the characters on both shows interact with each other. However, on the show Friends I feel the writing was much better and each character was more unique. I can identify on a more personal level in some ways with each character. I can't do the same with HIMYM.

FRIENDS is without a doubt the Mother of All good Sitcoms.
I also love How I Met Your Mother. But the fact that it has - like other sitcoms too - so many jokes from Friends in it, shows, that all those sitcoms were guided by Friends. It's still the best of the best, without a doubt. I can still watch it and laugh even though I know all the jokes.
I don't know exactly why. HIMYM seems to be going downhill though. That is, in 2012. I used to LOVE HIMYM, but it's getting a little stretched out. They should have ended it earlier.

The Humor on friends is more funny because it's situational comedy that often entails one character trying too hide something from the Other(s) while the humor on HIMYM is more about the characters saying somewhat predictable jokes that, while funny, rarely make me laugh out loud. I prefer the realistic dramatic irony in Friends than the Goofy Unrealistic jokes made in how i met your mother.
All of the characters on Friends play a big part in the show and all are very funny, while How I Met Your Mother is less of a group effort. I love both shows and I would agree with the article the HIMYM has better writing and storyline, but Friends has it's own culture and sayings and is just all-around funnier.

Friends had morals and themes. It's theme song is amazing, especially the long part. It is what makes you stay up late at night watching reruns of the show. Frankly, I could have gone into a bigger depth, but I am very tired. Please watch the show, and you will see what I mean.

Barney is a misogynistic **** who gives up on love whereas Joey is very respectful of everyone. It is very unrealistic that a group of friends spend the entire day in a bar and a couple also bring their child into the bar or that a pregnant woman would be spending time in a bar at all.
So many of the premises are the same and so are the cameos of many of the actors and actresses.
Because How I Met Your Mother had a horrible ending.
