It plays an important role in the regulation of the brains ability to have the ability to "be in a good mood. Yet, so does dopamine. Dopamine itself is likely more important as depletion of this in the human brain caused severe medical problems; Parkinson's, Alzheimer's. Dopamine can affect sexual drive, pleasure and motivation; and pain. The effect of a lack of dopamine is at the core of ADHD, ADD, and other problems with memory or concentration.

Dopamine, or at least how I categorize it in my feeble, non-neuroscientest mind, is like the engine for overall function of the mind. If you can regulate dopamine, be it excercise, work, financial gains, etc. This should permit for better serotonin regulation. Say I wake up from a solid sleep cycle, eat breakfast lunch and dinner, and then have a great jog, serotonin should release at proper times and will regulate say, me being able to fall asleep comfortably and thus being able to prepare for the next day.

Serotonin regulates moods and actions while dopamine is like a reward in a way. If you have too much or too less of serotonin, it's a bad thing. But with dopamine, people take drugs such as Cocaine in order to feel that burst of euphoria. Girls like chocolate when they're sad, because the dopamine they get from eating the product rises dopamine, to make them feel better. The ultimate suggestion after a bad breakup.
