Difference between Maybelline and CoverGirl

CoverGirl is an American cosmetics company founded in 1909. Its establishment of using models, or cover girls as endorsers of their product launched them to the forefront of the cosmetic industry. Advertising campaigns for CoverGirl have always featured famous faces wearing their makeup products and it is a strategy many other companies have copied. Originally owned by the Noxzema Company, CoverGirl was acquired by Proctor & Gamble in the late 1980s.

Maybelline is also an American cosmetics company that was established in the early 1900s. What started as an experiment to create a better eyelash covering, has turned into one of the largest cosmetic companies in the world. Maybelline is a company that is now owned by L'Oréal. Practically every drug store on the face of the planet carries Maybelline products.

History

CoverGirl was developed with the idea of creating a makeup that did not make women look like pinups. The "girl next door" look was their claim to fame and it has served them well for over 100 years. Famous actors such as Drew Barrymore and models like Christie Brinkley exude fresh faced beauty and now even celebrities such as Ellen DeGeneres are featured in the ads.

T.L. Williams was a chemist who developed a commercial mascara product after seeing what lengths women went to when applying Vaseline and coal dust to lengthen their lashes. Although women enjoyed his product, it had a weird sounding name. When he decided to combine his sister's name, Maybel with the key ingredient of his cosmetic, Vaseline, the hit name Maybelline was born.

Products

Maybelline manufactures cosmetic products of all sorts. Lipstick, foundation, blush, mascara, eyeliner, and eye shadow are available in many colors and varieties. Aside from cosmetics, Maybelline also has a line of nail polish, shampoos, conditioners, face creams and powders.

CoverGirl manufactures the same types of products as Maybelline. CoverGirl was the first makeup company to introduce a medicated foundation and cosmetic line. With their clean and fresh type of appeal, CoverGirl cosmetics continue to grow and add to their offering of beauty products.

Both companies are reputed to conduct research on animals and have come under fire from animal rights groups. Regardless of how cruel anyone thinks animal testing might be, it has not dampened sales for either of these companies.

Similarities and Differences

  • Women have strong preferences when it comes to makeup brands. Maybelline and Cover Girl rank at or near the top every year and have a loyal customer base. Both brands of cosmetics are available at local discount stores and drug stores. Private label cosmetic products just do not have the same appeal to women who shop for and use makeup, as they are accustomed to the quality and affordability of the name brand products they have grown to love.
  • Maybelline and CoverGirl cosmetic products cater to all skin types and colors.
  • Mineral makeup, cream foundation, lip tint and mascaras that lengthen, strengthen and stay put all day are typical offerings from these top-rated cosmetic companies and are likely to continue to thrive.
