HSV can lay dormant for years...often many do not know they carry the virus. As a result, it can easily be passed. The mass population often do not know simple universal precautions to protect themselves as well as others from transmission. Until a full blown rash presents, general symptoms or no symptoms at all do not contribute to protection.
Sure they are out there; but I have never met a person over the age of 20 that has never had a cold sore.
