Anyone born in either of the American continents is a 'native' of that continent, no matter what their ethnicity.

The term American Indian originated in the confusion of the explorers, not from the self-understanding of the native peoples of North America. "American Indian" can also be confusing since people from India and their descendants do live in America, and may consider themselves Indian American.

Native American recognizes that the people so names were here first. In fact, the most controversial part of both terms is the "American" part, since native people have been repeatedly excluded from the rights and privileges of American citizenship.
