Narendra Modi has been the Chief Minister of Gujarat since 2001. He is appreciated for controlling terrorism and making Gujarat an economic powerhouse. He belongs to Bharatiya Janta Party – currently the opposition at centre level.
Nitish Kumar is the 32nd chief minister of the Indian state of Bihar. He is the leader of Janta Dal United party. As a CM he has initiated several development activities and has taken many steps to keep crime in check. He is currently serving is his third term as the Chief Minister of Bihar.
Early Life
Narendra Modi has a Masters Degree in political science. He has been a member of RSS - Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh since childhood. He joined ABVP, Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parisha, a student organisation, and was a part of an anti-corruption movement. He joined BJP in 1987 and entered mainstream politics.
Nitish Kumar was born in Bhaktiarpur, Bihar. His father was a freedom fighter. He studied Electrical Engineering at Bihar College of Engineering (NIT Patna). He independently became a member of the Bihar Legislative assembly in 1985 and in 1989 he became the president of Yuva Lok Dal. He has also served as the Railway Minister of India.
Tenure as Chief Minister
Narendra Modi became the Chief Minister of Gujarat in October 2001 when the state was suffering from a number of natural calamities including a devastating earthquake in January 2001. After the 2002 riots in Gujarat, in which more than a thousand Hindus and Muslims were killed, the opposition held Modi responsible for helping Hindus in riots and asked him to resign. Modi submitted the resignation but was elected by the people of Gujarat in subsequent elections.
Nitish Kumar was appointed CM in 2000 but he resigned after 7 days. In 2005 he led the the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), and ended the 15 year rule of Rashtriya Janta Dal led by Lalu Prasad Yadav. In 2010, he led JDU-BJP alliance and again won the elections.
Recognitions
Narendra Modi was declared the Best Chief Minister in India by India Today in 2006. fDi Magazine gave Modi the fDi Personality of the Year award in 2009.
Nitish Kumar was recognised as Forbes India’s Person of the Year and CNN-IBN Indian of the Year in 2010. The Economic Times gave Nitish the Business Reformer of the Year award in 2009. According to CNN-IBN and HT survey he was the best Chief Minister in 2007.
