The Philadelphia Zoo can be found in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, right on the banks of the Schuylkill River. The zoo has the distinction of being the first in the United States, and it was actually established as a result of a Commonwealth act. Planned for a March 21, 1859, the launch was held back a few months by the then ongoing American Civil War. The Philadelphia Zoo finally opened its doors to the public on July 1, 1874.

The Philadelphia Zoo specializes in breeding animals that have traditionally been difficult or impossible to breed while in captivity. The zoo also often works in partnerships with conservationist groups around the world in order to preserve the natural habitats of the animals that they house. The Philadelphia Zoo currently has over 1,300 animals, a large number of which are rare and endangered. The zoo also has a section specifically for children', a balloon ride, a lake, a carousel and numerous exhibits.

Among the most popular attractions at the Bronx Zoo is the "African Plains" exhibit, which gives visitors an up close view of lions, storks, zebras, giraffes, gazelles and wild dogs.
