Difference between Sony TV and Zee TV
Sony TV or Sony Entertainment Television (SET) and Zee TV are amongst India’s most popular entertainment channels. Both have their headquarters in Mumbai, Maharashtra. Family audiences are the major targets with serials of various genres broadcast including drama, comedy, horror, reality and live events. Sony and Zee not only face competition from each other but also from other players in the market such as Star Plus and Colours.
History
SET is owned by Multi Screen Media Pvt. Ltd. MSM has been a subsidiary of Sony Pictures entertainment since 1995. MSM controls a family of channels including SAB TV, SET Pix, SET Max, Animax and AXN. Sony TV was launched in October 1995.
Zee TV is owned by Zee Entertainment Enterprises was founded by Subhash Chandra and was introduced in India in October 1992. It was the first Hindi satellite channel. Zee and Star were partners until Rupert Murdoch’s News Corporation got hold of Star. Zee TV was launched in the UK and USA in 1995 and 1998 respectively. It has a number of sister channels such as Zee News, Zing, Zee Cafe, 9x and so on.
Availability
Sony TV is available in BIG TV, Dish TV, and Tata Sky satellite services. As far as cable services are concerned it is available on Hathway Digital Cable, FDI Digital Cable (Goa), Star Hub TV (Singapore) and Verizon FiOS. Zee TV on the other hand is available on Tata Sky and Dish TV in India. It is available on various other satellite services in Malaysia, Mauritius, US, Sri Lanka, UK, Israel and Canada. It is also available on IPTV in US (U-verse), UK (Talk-Talk TV) and Singapore (mio TV).
Programming
The most successful programs on Sony are Boogie Woogie (dance competition), Indian Idol, C.I.D. (thriller), Jassi jaisi koi nahi, adoption of Colombian programme Ugly Betty, Fame Gurukul (hybrid of Indian Idol and Big Boss) and Aahat (a horror show). Sony bought the copyrights of Kaun Banega Carorpati (Who wants to be millionaire) from star in July 2010 and is currently airing the fourth season of KBC with Amitabh Bachchan as host. Programmes currently broadcast by Zee are chiefly dramas. Khana Khazana and Yoga for you are related to health and fitness. Jhansi ki Rani (Queen of Jhansi) is a historical programme narrating struggle of Rani Laxmi Bai against the British rule in India.
