Prevented many a scrape or cut from infection, including the surgery infection in one of my spots on my back. I use it for everything from hang nails to any other break in my skin...it's fantstic!
  • Anonymous . 3+ yrs. ago
It is what I have always used, keeps the wound moist and has antibiotics in case of an infection.

namely the trio of antibiotics differentiates the two products & is a bonus in terms off infection control, otherwise I think they are made up of the same base material.
  • Anonymous . 3+ yrs. ago
Because Neosporin kills the bacteria in your wound, you won't end up with a nasty scar after it heals.

No one uses vaseline anymore for wounds, people expect that there is some sort of magical healing medicine in the ointment, and hence tend to use antibacterial ointments. Don't believe vaseline has been used in the modern home for scrapes and cuts in many decades, altho my mother always did. We didn't have anything else back then other than bactine, which was the preferred treatment.

Small wounds and scrapes heal faster and the redness in my skin goes away faster than using nothing. Never new petrolium jelley was "ok" for open wounds.

Neosporin is widely and aggressively marketed in the US. Folk remedies and 'alternative medicine' will always have their proponents, but too few people are willing to research the difference or don't think beyond knowing that neosporin is a relatively effective topical treatment.

The abstract at the end failed to assess relative effectiveness in those areas where both substances held the same effect. I was prompted to look up comparisons by a doctor stating they were roughly equivalent, despite the presence of the antibiotics in neosporin.

People think they got to have antibiotic. However, as we began to develop more and more resistant bacteria, years ago, I began recommending Vaseline instead of the antibacterials. However, that was with strict instructions to wash the wound with warm soap and water carefully first, not allow fingers in the Vaseline, and to apply it with Q-tips that haven't been exposed to touching either. I didn't notice any increase in my infections rates. I still use antibiotic creams in immunocompromised patients (diabetes, transplants, HIV, etc.), for wounds that already had the appearance of infection and for more severe/deep wounds. For minor cuts/scrapes, however, Vaseline is fine. In patients with infection already present, one study showed antibiotic to be about 3x more effective than Vaseline alone. The point of the Vaseline is to moisten the wound and provide a barrier to bacteria, not so much killing bacteria already there.

My mom's the one who introduced me to Neosporin, and I use it for almost every small skin injury, such as a paper cut, burn or scrape. I do notice that the wounds generally heal faster when I use Neosporin than with nothing, although I've never tried Vaseline for the same purpose.

  • Anonymous . 3+ yrs. ago
It is probably used MORE often because it is cheaper, has a wider usage, known for cold weather protection; and so if you considered chapping as a form of minor cuts then technically Vaseline will win as the most frequently used. However, if you ONLY count cuts where someone seeks help and is covering it with a band aid ... usage of Neosporin-like cream may out number Vaseline -- just because people think they will be making a difference.

I've thought that during reading this people can use Neosporin and Vaseline/petroleum jelly so the Neosporin can kill bacteria THEN the Vaseline can seal the small wound and blocking the bacteria and healing the small wound faster
  • Anonymous . April 2022
Generic Vaseline can be cheaper than Neosporin or generic Neosporin.
