My female cats tend to be a lot more independent. They will be patted when THEY want. Usually they do not like being picked up but when they choose, they will climb on me. All the male cats I have had are incredibly affectionate. One of my babies had to have a paw on me at all times. They are cuddly, like to be picked up, and usually follow me around.

Owned and also known many short hair males and females. Females seem more independent and seem to be wary of the males even though the males may just be being friendly towards them. As with humans, females seem to have "attitude"
Female cats would be considered more independent due to the fact that they choose when they want to be handled whereas a male can usually be approached at any time.

The two females are more independent. My Man Harley is a chicken, runs away from any tom cat wandering around, where as my females will plan to attack... Harley loves his mum unconditionally, where as the females are happy to do there own thing and come for cuddles here and there.
