Ibuprofen is the only the only pain reliever that helps with my headaches. The other day, I had a pounding headache for over 12 hours. A lay on the couch with ice on your forehead headache. When I sat up I was sick to my stomach. When I finally ventured to my medicine cabinet, I was alarmed to see my advil bottle missing. I found some dayquil and reluctantly swallowed two capsules. No help at all. 12 hours later, I remembered where my Ibuprofen was located. There were three tablets left and I happily took all three. Within 30 minutes my headache almost gone. I later went to my medicine cabinet and read the back of the dayquil box. Mystery solved! Active ingredient = Acetaminophen. I have no idea why one works over the other for me, but this experience confirmed that tylenol does not work for me!

It always works on most ailments, from toothaches, headaches, just feeling lousy, to major headaches. For me, I get better relief with higher doses probably because of longevity. That said, I get better results with Aleve on my aching knees after a long jog or run. The aches are due to age I think. And I always reached for Tylenol when the kids had fever. And yet, Advil is a staple in our house. In fact, Advil is also the fifth food group for people over 50. :-)

A few years back I ruptured a disk in the L3-4 range. while awaiting for test results and eventual surgery, my Dr. gave me Hydrocodone. It did nothing. In fact no OTC meds could touch the pain until a friend of mine introduced me to Aleve. The pain stopped completely in moments and I actually fell asleep on her couch. That's when I learned about anti-inflammatory vs pain relievers. Most pain is caused by inflammation and it can't be covered up by a pain reliever no matter how strong it is. the problem is that if you take it too frequently for too long a period, it has adverse effects on the Kidney's. But in modeeration Aleve wins hands down.
