Difference between Energy Star and Non Energy Star

The Energy Star rating system reflects the energy efficiency of electrical appliances. It is an international system that is designed to help consumers to choose the most energy efficient appliances. The system started in the United States, where it is backed by the government, but it has since been adopted by a number of other countries around the world, including Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Taiwan, Canada and the European Union.

Although the Energy Star label denotes that a particular appliance meets some very stringent requirements for energy efficiency, the absence of such a label does not necessarily mean that an appliance is completely inefficient or that it would not be able to obtain an Energy Star rating. The appliance might have been manufactured in a country that does not use the Energy Star system.

More than 40,000 products including a wide range of different electrical appliances and new homes have an Energy Star rating. The exact requirements that must be met in order to obtain an Energy Star label vary between different types of products, but the main characteristic that these items share is that they are highly energy efficient.

Energy Consumption

The devices that meet the requirements for Energy Star labeling use a lot less energy than those that do not meet the requirements. In order to obtain an Energy Star rating, appliances typically have energy consumption that is between 20 and 30 percent less than the consumption levels that federal standards require.

Products that do not have an Energy Star label have not proven to the Energy Star program that they meet the requirements that the program demands, including those that relate to the appliance's energy efficiency.

Environmental Benefits

Appliances that are more energy efficient use less electricity than those that do not meet the requirements for the Energy Star system. Reducing energy consumption can have some important environmental benefits. Most electricity that is used in the home comes from the use of fossil fuels such as oil. These non-renewable resources generate a lot of pollution when they are used to generate power. Using more energy efficient appliances can contribute to a reduction in energy use that can reduce dependence on fossil fuels and which can therefore help to reduce the pollution created by energy production. Energy efficient washing machines, for example, also require less soap than a standard machine.

Savings

Choosing an appliance that has an Energy Star label can lead to significant savings over the lifetime of the appliance. Since an appliance that has been granted an Energy Star label must be an energy efficient choice, it will use a lot less power than appliances that are unable to meet the requirements for the Energy Star program. This means that it will use less electricity when you use the appliance in your home, which can help reduce your energy bills and help you save money.

Similarities and Differences

  • The Energy Star rating system is designed to enable consumers to find the most energy efficient appliances and products.
  • Energy Star appliances consume less power than appliances that do not meet the Energy Star requirements.
  • Energy efficiency reduces power consumption.
  • Using less energy results in environmental benefits and savings.

I am looking at refrigerators. Some are NOT energy star rated but show 20% less energy use per year than others that are energy star rated. Makes no sense to me.
