Difference between Jersey Shore and The Hills

Reality shows have been with us for quite some time now, but the trend doesn't appear to be showing any signs of slowing down–much less of stopping. It seems that no sooner does one reality show go off the air, when another will show up to take its place. And two of the most widely viewed of this platform are Jersey Shore and The Hills. Let's see what these two are all about.

The Hills

Profile

Jersey Shore is a reality TV program aired on MTV. The series focuses on eight housemates who spend the entire summer together. The first season of the show placed the cast at the Jersey Shore, with the second season finding them at Miami Beach. Jersey Shore was first filmed in a summerhouse in Seaside Heights in August 2009. Other settings for the show are Toms River, Neptune and Atlantic City.

The Hills is also an MTV production, and it deals with the lives of several people from Los Angeles. The show debuted on May 31, 2006, and it has received a fair amount of critical attention, with Entertainment Weekly giving it the #82 spot in their "100 Best Shows of the Last 25 Years" list.

Premise

The Jersey Shore follows the travails of eight people who spend all summer in different resorts and summer getaways located along the Jersey Shore, with particular focus being given to the town of Seaside Heights. While the residents of the house are generally free to do what they want, they will have to work at a boardwalk store under the supervision of the owner of the house in which they are living. Participants who fail to stick to the rules set by the shore house owner–who is also their boss at work–run the risk of being evicted from the shore house, and from the show.

The Hills for its part focuses on the lives of young women from Los Angeles. The series is actually a bit of an offshoot from the previous MTV series, Laguna Beach: The Real Orange County, which was a big hit for the network. The Hills is billed as a reality TV series (and in fact looks like one), much of the show is actually scripted.

Season Run

After a successful first season of Jersey Shore, MTV announced that there would be a second season, which would begin airing in the summer of 2010, and would be comprised of 12 episodes. A third season is also in the making.

The Hills for its part appears to have run its course, with an article published in Entertainment Weekly magazine announcing that the series would end with the sixth season, which would be comprised of 12 episodes.
