Difference between 3 Idiots and 5 Point Someone

Indian literary works have historically made an indelible impact on literary fans everywhere. Today, the world is recognizing all kinds of Indian talents. India has also started making movies on its own literary works whether it in the form of Parineeta or the latest 3 Idiots film based on the famous novel, 5 Point Someone, by an IIM (Ahemdabad) alumnus and IITian, Chetan Bhagat. 3 Idiots was the first novel by this author and turned out to be the most successful movie in Bollywood history. A huge controversy swirled after the movie was released when the author, Chetan Bhagat, claimed that he had not been given his dues from the movie by Raj Kumar Hirani, director of 3 Idiots.

Controversy

Bhagat said that he expected that his name would appear in the opening credits of the movie, but his name was listed in the closing credits of the movie instead. He had even drawn earnings on the condition that he would be credited prominently in the movie, but it was not so. Vidhu Vinod Chopra had refuted such allegations and stated in a press conference held with the reporters of the Indian News service, that he had clarified to Mr Bhagat that his name would only come in the closing credits of the movie. He has commented that the director and the producer of the movie had lied to him. Later Rajkumar Hirani also supported the claims of the producer saying that the contract with Bhagat clearly stated that Chetan’s name would be listed in the closing credits of the film only.

Book to Movie

The author also commented that he expected the movie to be loosely based on his book 5 Point Someone. He had been told by the film makers that the movie would only draw 2-3 % of the book’s content; rather it contains 70% of the book’s story. Chetan also apologized to the families of the director and producer later. Chetan Bhagat noted that the movie is not similar to the book’s story. Rather it takes some elements from it and is clearly able to depict its own soul, however the main theme of the movie is drawn directly from 5 Point Someone. Mr Chopra also said that making the movie solely on the basis of the book was not possible because it needed to be adjusted to have an entertaining screenplay, so he worked on the screenplay in US along with the film’s scriptwriters.

I read the book and saw the movie. Movie is really good. They took the basic essence from the book and added bollywood masala. I like both.
