It is hard for some individuals to decipher between an ordering and a grouping when determining whether to use permutation or combination.

combination lock
Combination is spoken in regular English language to refer to order.
Because I hear people say it more.
Well, the "combination" lock is a prime example.
Combination seems to be used loosely in normal communication. As offered in this article a combination lock is an in-accurate name as 5-24-13 is the same combination as 24-5-13 yet the lock will only open using the first order given. So basically the lock opens only when the correct permutation of that particular combination of numbers is given. Thanks your break down of the two different concepts very helpful!
Because of the combination lock
its hard
People often say, "How many combinations can be made?" Often times when they say this they really mean, "How many ways can the objects be arranged or selected?" This is a more universal statement and covers both combinations and permutations.
