My ancestors were immigrants who became US citizens legally.
They were never referred to as aliens.

Alien - sounds a bit too negative and too cosmic, immigrant - sounds more categorized by law, foreigner - sounds more neutral,
commonly used , do not have other misunderstanding meanings.
