Difference between Shanghai and Beijing
Of the many populous cities, Shanghai and Beijing are the two that override the rest in the People’s Republic Of China. Shanghai exerts a lot of influence in terms of economy, politics and culture in the world. Since the 1930s, Shanghai has flourished as the center of commerce and is a multinational hub of finances and businesses for both the East as well as the West. Apart from this, Shanghai is also well-known for its tourist destinations, especially The Bund, Yuyuan Garden and the Pudong skyline. Most important of all, it is better known as a ‘showpiece’ of China’s economy. Beijing, the capital of China is a major transportation hub. It is directly governed by the Central Government as a municipality. It is one of the Four Great Ancient Capitals Of China.
Geography
Situated on the Yangtze River Delta, Shanghai is on the eastern coast of China and close to Beijing and Hong Kong. In the north and west, it is bordered by the Jiangsu Province, on the east by the East China Sea and is dissected by the Huangpu River which is a tributary of the Yangtze. Shanghai has an elevation of about 4 meters above sea level. The highest point of this delta is at the Peak of Dajinshan Island, Shanghai is situated on the alluvial side of the delta. It is for this reason that skyscrapers are constructed on a concrete area so as to prevent structures from sinking into the land. Beijing, on the other hand hosts The Great Wall Of China which is known as one of the 7 wonders of the world. The highest point here is almost 2,303 meters which is up the Dongling Mt. in the Xishan ranges.
Climate
Shanghai experiences a humid subtropical climate with four distinct seasons. Summers are hot and humid whereas winters are chilly due to the cold winds blowing in from Siberia during the night. Beijing has a dry and humid climate, but is basically a humid continental climate. Summers here are hot and humid whereas winters are cold and dry.
Economy
Shanghai has remained one of the most prosperous cities in the Far East since the 1930s. Today, it has a cosmopolitan outlook with sophisticated and affluent customers and also skilled and educated labour force that brings about customers from overseas. It has three large service industries, including Financial Services, Real Estates and Retail. The city of London published that Shanghai ranks sixth in the last edition of the Global Financial Centres Index. Beijing was the first of the post-industrial cities of China and is equally prosperous. The Real Estate and Automobile sectors are the two most successful sectors in Beijing which have flourished are seen to be booming again recently.
