While both men were peaceful leaders, Nelson Mandela still used violent tactics after trying to be non-violent. Ghandi was fully able to successfully produce non-violent protesting against racism, choosing to use the might of words over the violent influence of weapons. That is why Ghandi is my choice, he was able to prove that violence doesn't always solve anything.

  • Anonymous . 3+ yrs. ago
Gandhi's appeal was universal, his non-violence teachings adopted by other peace leaders, for example Martin Luter King, or by Lech Walesa; but Mandela's contribution is also great; we need more leaders like that.
  • Anonymous . 3+ yrs. ago
Mandela as well as Dr. King had the example of Mahatma Gandhi to emulate!
  • Anonymous . 3+ yrs. ago
Mahatma Ganghi at that age and era managed to get the whole of India under a similiar thought and was able to lead the freedom movements as a whole. He started off with an ambition and thought and was able to do what he wanted inspite of all the difficulties he had to face.
  • Anonymous . 3+ yrs. ago

If you state PEACEFUL there is no way Mandela can be included? Are you out of your minds? oh my God… Do you think that faking history facts and hiding the truth will make the world a favor? Lessons not learned, are there still to be learned as many time as necessary for human history goes on… there is NOT A WAY to go forward hiding facts… You media JUNK!
  • Anonymous . 3+ yrs. ago
Gandhi was my number one hero from the time that I could read books and found that this man has done a load of good deed for his country peace
fully and just by the stroke of a pen freed India from British rules.
Mandela followed in Gandhi foot step and achieved the same for his
country and is my number two hero.So it`s not a question of who is more
famous leader they are both equally hero`s for me.GOD BLESS THEM BOTH.
  • Anonymous . 3+ yrs. ago

Gandhi is studied more and has more of a focus in classrooms of all grades. He is used as an idol more than a lot of people.
  • Anonymous . 3+ yrs. ago
Ghandi stayed true to his "non-violent protest" and had been heard to remark that "there are causes for which I am willing to die, but there is no cause for which I am willing to kill." This is the MAIN DIFFERENCE between Mandela and Ghandi and it is a telling difference of innate character
  • Anonymous . 3+ yrs. ago
Nelson Mandela learnt from Ghandi... not the other way around.
  • Anonymous . 3+ yrs. ago
Gandhi stuck to his principles
  • Anonymous . 3+ yrs. ago
He was Mandela's predecessor in a way and really demonstrated the power of civil disobediance. Both men went through excruciating cirumstances, but Gandhi will always be one of the great historical names, especially since he died through assassination rather than old age.

I selected this option because gandi is the one who is still remembered and will always be remembered. we study about gandhi in our text books but before the deadth of nelson mandela we didn't even knew that who was he and suddenly if another gandhi is born then we cannot give him the the same respect which we give to mohandas karamchand gandhi.nelson mandela might be gandhi for his country but he'll always be second and no one in this whole world can take place of our mahatma gandhi and of all the truth is just this much that nelson mandela is just a follower of gandhi so this dosen't mean that he can take place of our one and only mahatma gandhi....MAHATMA GANDHI JINDABAD

Gandhi stuck to his principle of non-violence from the very get-go. This apart, Gandhi worked for the peaceful co-existence of Hindu & Muslims. Gandhi worked on a very large nation with different linguistic states, which is not an easy task. The linguistically divided States in India adored Gandhi as a whole. These are special circumstances which bring Gandhi a step ahead of Mandela in terms of fame. But both Gandhi & Mandela are equally admirable persons.
  • Anonymous . 3+ yrs. ago
Nelson Mandela looked up to Gandhi for advice and ideas. He admired him. More people seem to know the name Gandhi rather than Mandela.

At least in the United States because there are civil rights and human rights leads who credit Gandhi with their nonviolent commitment and the strategies he perfected, e.g., Cesar Chavez, Bayard Rustin who organized the March on Washington, MLK, Jr.

I'm Venezuelan and here in my country most people have ever heard this name. As it's been said in the article, Mandela's participation in anti-apartheid movements is the most famous feature about this man and this fact shows that his participation was a role model for the whole world and most of the progress the world has made until now on such topics has been guided by his actions somehow. However, we can't underrate Gandhi's legacy which worked as a base for all of the further actions that were made later on.
