teachers tend to use same characteristic with words as also,and,both and in the same way, to get any meaning across whatever they are to get a message across.

My choice is compare because this means to tell the similarities and differences.This is what teachers want you to do most often. However contrast implies only differences.

because they say how was this different, like a dog and cat, but i do see how compare and contrast are better used together, because they are different from each other, but the difference they have go together to support one another.
