OpenGL is much much much more widely supported, and is the standard. Direct3D is basically an API layer over the OpenGL stuff, which Windows has to support anyway. It also costs money to develop with.

I've always found OpenGL to produce slightly better image quality. The blacks are always blacker and this leands to richer colors. I've also found most games that use OpenGL tend to have deeper shadows, more realistic blending and generally more depth of field
