better picture quality.
Picture quality (and sound quality) is the whole reason for having a TV. Everything else - including shaving an inch or two off cabinet depth - is a distant second.
Picture quality is my concern.
because of the picture quality
Picture quality is everything. Who cares how thin it is.
local dimming for better quality picture
best picture!
I have just bought a Samsung 40" Edge Led TV (UE40D5000).
The picture is AMAZING! However I have noticed some "clouding effect" (white patches) around the corners and the top of the screen! The shop where I have bought the TV told me Its very common problem at Edge Led TVs. I have exchanged my TV for a new one and I have the same problem again. Im really thinking about to go for a Full Led Backlit TV (UE40D5500) cause the shopkeeper told me He has never seen clouding on a Full Led Backlite TV.

performance>presentability
Contrast and picture quality is preferred to appearance (Thinness?).
Who looks at the side of the TV? Even picture frames are thicker.
I already own a Samsung TV with backlit LED but without 3D. Now another purchase is right ahead and I was actually interested in the new Samsung UE 55D 8090. This TV is an edge lit LED and I already had the chance to watch some demos on this TV, in 2D and 3D as well. Even though this really new and state of the art TV provides 3D, 800mhz, 55 inch and a variety of really nice online features called "Smart HUB" I decided either to keep my current TV which is 9' smaller but with backlit LED or to buy a new "NEO NDP" from Panasonic. Why? The picture quality in light scenes is really awesome and the designers really did a great job. But when it comes to dark scenes this TV shows how worse the panel quality really is, not only compared to my backlit LED but also compared to low pricing LCD TVs without LED technology. I was really disappointed and now I´m frustrated as **** because the different manufacturers decided only to produce edge LED any further but not backlit LED. Who the f*** really cares about 2cm thickness more or less? To me it´s all about the quality, not the price. But it seems that quality doesn't count any further. It´s a mess! Now Panasonic's NDP technology is the only alternative I have.
Higher quality picture across the most formats.
better picture
I am always for the quality of the picture. I am a commercial photographer so I insists on best picture quality. I dont car about the thickness or the weight of the TV. Better camera lenses and camera bodies are heavier than the entry level ones. Everything better or best comes with a price tag. pay for it and enjoy.
It's all about quality...

Better picture quality
I had read many reviews about both the Technology (Back lit & Edge Lit). And compare the performance. finally come to an conclusion, that Back lit has more quality features than Edge lit, even it is thicker than Edge lit.
picture quality
Local dimming wins it for me. Since I am not hanging it on the wall the extra thickness and weight are not as critical.
A brighter picture and better contrast are important factors for this choice.
Do not plan on a wall mount will go on an entertainment console.
Quality over quantity!
At least for main TV, I would prefer better picture over the slimmer and washed out version.
Better Picture quality. I buy TV to see a good quality picture and not for enjoying the looks of the TV itself.
Better contrast due to local dimming
Picture quality.

I went to the local Best Buy and compared LED televions and bought the one that had the best picture. It was backlighted. The television that it replaced was an lcd. There was no comparison. LED tvs for me from now on.

Better picture
the need to know you are getting a superior picture
I am primarily looking for a 4k tv for gaming on x- box-s console and computer.I primarily play FPS games. From what I am reading here it seems Backlit would provide for more realistic lighting effects since the leds behind the explosions on screen would provide more light for explosive effects and various intensities of lighting much more effectively than edge lit. So it looks like I will be purchasing the Sony 900e.
picture quality
light bleed sucks
Better viewing quality. Not concerned by thinness or weight.
better picture
a better overall picture quality
I would like better black level and contrast as most TV review site say, contrast is the number one things to look for. Edge doesn't have good contrast as you said here.
