Because without them the rythym is not complete. It is hard for the drummer to hold it together on his own. So it helps to keep it together to have a bass guitar.
Bass is coolest
Just take a look at Cliff Burton. You can do his solos on electric guitar easly, but on bass... It's a lot more harder, still, he managed to do it perfectly. That is why I choose bass guitar.

Playing bass guitar gives me energy and i loved it! You can express your mood while playing it.
Cos they're cooler and actually more important in the song. You can't play a good tune without a bass.
