Difference between Guess and Gucci
Gucci is of course known as one of the world’s most distinguished brands of clothing, but Guess certainly isn't too shabby either. Both offering high-quality clothes and accessories–albeit to different clienteles–these companies stand at the top of their respective fields, which makes them deserving of the comparison we present here.
Guess, the products of which are marketed with the "GUESS?” label, is a luxury clothing line based in the United States. In addition to clothes, Guess also offers accessories such as watches, jewelry and perfumes. Guess also owns another clothing and accessories line called "Marciano".
The House of Gucci, or simply Gucci, is a fashion and leather goods label based in Italy. The line is a part of the Gucci Group, which in turn is under the ownership of Pinault-Printemps-Redoute out of France. The company was founded in 1921 by Guccio Gucci in Florence or Firenze.
Guess first entered the market in 1982, although it was the iconic black-and-white ads released in 1985 that imprinted them in the public consciousness. The recipient of several Clio Awards, Guess also made its mark with models that later achieved stardom, many of who got their first big break via the brand’s ads.
Guess was also one of the first to develop designer jeans, and for a period in the 1980s, theirs was among some of the most popular brands. While the company started out with a line of jeans designed for women, a men's line was quick to follow in 1983. The company later developed a line of watches that included "Guess", "Guess Steel", and the "Guess Collection", all of which are still being produced to this day. 1984 saw strengths and weaknesses in the introduction of a line of baby's clothes known as "Baby Guess.
Gucci has had a strong performance over the years, and its brand identity has remained focused and consistent even in the wake of numerous forays into new design strategies. Much of its experimentation is the work of creative director Frida Giannini, who has introduced designs that both depart from and reference classic Gucci styles to successful results.
Both companies have been involved in a legal issue with Gucci having used Guess for supposedly copying one of its dress designs and even a number of its trademarked logos. Among the design elements in contention are the familiar Gucci green and red stripe, the interlocking GG mark, and stylized G mark often seen on the brand’s handbags, belts, gloves, watches and glasses. Filed in the Manhattan federal court, the lawsuit seeks an unspecified amount in monetary damages from Guess.
