Difference between Dr. Oz and Dr. Phil

When it comes to celebrity doctors, two names come up more than anyone else’s and they are Dr. Oz and Dr. Phil. Both men have achieved international attention mostly on the strength of their affiliations with Oprah Winfrey, although they do have some marked differences. This comparison takes a look at some of the more distinctive characteristics of these two celebrity medical figures.

Who They Are

Dr. Oz was born Mehmet Cengiz Oz on June 11, 1960. He is a noted cardiothoracic surgeon and is also a published author. He first came into widespread public attention for his appearances on the Oprah Winfrey Show but he has appeared on Larry King Live and CNN, in addition to a host of other networks. He later launched his own daily talk show in 2009. Dr. Phil was born Phillip Calvin McGraw on September 1, 1950, and received fame as Dr. Phil on the Oprah Winfrey Show as well. A published author and former psychologist, Dr. Phil is also the host of a television show under his own name, which first aired in 2002.

Education

Dr. Oz attended Tower Hill School in Delaware and received a degree from Harvard University. He later went on to earn a joint MD and MBA degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and The Wharton School in 1986. Dr. Phil graduated from Midwestern State University in 1975, where he earned a degree in psychology. He later earned a master's degree in experimental psychology from the University of North Texas in 1976 and also earned a PhD in clinical psychology in 1979.

Early Years

Dr. Oz was born to Turkish parents in Cleveland, Ohio. His parents had previously migrated to the United States from Konya, Turkey. The move to the U.S. was largely due to his father’s earning of medical scholarships. His mother actually came from a wealthy family, with numerous relatives who were writers, civil engineers and businessmen. Dr. Phil was born in Vinita, Oklahoma to Jerry Stevens and Joe McGraw. His childhood was marked by a relocation that enabled his father to pursue a career as a psychologist. Dr. Phil himself was quite active in sports and he actually attended the University of Tulsa on a football scholarship. His football career was however marked by a stunning defeat to the University of Houston team, against which his team lost 100-6. Dr. Phil later attended Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, Texas.
