Quality is definitely better and unique styles. I never hesitate to spend my whole paycheck in their store and am 100% satisfied. My whole closet is from UO and will always be better than American apparel, thank you:)
The clothing of American Apparel is too simple. Maybe that is their style but I am not so into it. Compared with American Apparel, Urban Outfitters seems to be more various both in colour and in fashion thing.

Better selection
american apparel sells 15 different bland items of clothing in 30 different neon colors for way more than the cheap tacky clothes are worth.
i work for urban outfitters and i've never been a skinny mini. I've never felt comfortablr trying on a pair of high waisted pants at American Apparel.
They are cheap in price and totally fit my style taste! UO all the way!!

For the most part, I think american apparel is too basic. Urban outfitters has more options with a wide variety of styles.
Urban Outfitters isn't as pricey, they offer jeans, quirky tees, and generally a wider selection.
American Apparel just throws well made tees for $30+ at you.
I go there often, they have pretty stuff, not very good in quality though.
More variety, A lot of American Apparels clothes are unwearable to most social events such as the spandax bright colourd shorts and leggings. Still I love shopping at both!
Urban outfitters has a wider selection than American Apparel.
