Trademark is a lengthier process; thereby giving the owner more jurisdiction over their product, by the simple fact more information has been given to the officials who monitor trademarks. If you have a Registered Trademark, it is more of a challenge in a court of law. It also means the whole item is registered, not just a part of it (like an earring clip, for example, may be patent pending.)
