Difference between Pepcid and Zantac

Hyperacidity is something that many people unfortunately have to go through, and for some, the condition is a chronic one. Thankfully, there are numerous medications available over the counter that can help clear up many of the more painful symptoms of the condition, with Pepcid and Zantac among the more well known. Here's a look at what these two medications can do for you.

Profile

Pepcid (also known by its clinical name Famotidine) belongs to the category of drugs known as histamine-2 blockers. Such drugs work by reducing the amount of acid produced by the stomach. When combined with calcium and magnesium–both minerals that neutralize stomach acids, Pepcid is often prescribed for the treatment of heartburn related to acid indigestion.

Zantac also belongs to the histamine-2 blocker category, and like Pepcid, it has the effect of reducing the amount of acid in the stomach. Zantac is typically used in the treatment of ulcers in the stomach and intestines, and conditions such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome and gastroesophageal reflux disease or GERD.

Risk Factors

It is important to note that heartburn is quite similar to some of the typical symptoms of a heart attack. If you feel unusual chest pain, dizziness, or pain that radiates to your arm or shoulder after taking Pepcid, it is advisable to seek medical attention immediately. Also consult with a doctor if you experience sweating, nausea and/or vomiting.

As for Zantac, you should be aware that users are at increased risk of developing pneumonia when taking the medication. The symptoms you will want to look out for are chest pain, fever, shortness of breath, and a cough accompanied by green or yellow mucus. Patients who are taking Zantac would also be well advised to avoid taking alcohol, since this can increase the damage to the stomach.

What To Tell Your Doctor

If you experience any type of nausea, vomiting, and/or stomach pain, you should ask your doctor if it is okay for you to take Pepcid. This precaution should also be taken if you suffer from unexplained weight loss, difficulty in breathing, or if you suffer from chronic heartburn. If you do suffer from these conditions, your doctor may prescribe a totally different medication.

Before taking Zantac, it would be best to inform your doctor of any allergies that you may have, and of the presence of a kidney or liver condition. Patients with porphyria would also be well advised to consult with a doctor before taking Zantac. In such cases, your doctor may prescribe a lower dose of the medication, or he may recommend another medication entirely.
