I read that both are not " politically acceptable" but shouldn't there be two separate terms for differentiating between proportional and non-proportional little people?

Midget is an offensive slang term that refers to shorter than average people while dwarf refers to a person that has a congenital disease known as dwarfism.

The intonation used by adults in early childhood reflected depredation for 'midgets' as well as shame, since we had small people in our family. This was suggested to have been caused genetically by intermarrying (first cousins) long ago in the Ozarks.

You don't hear either turn that much anymore. But dwarf is the more polite hear. Little or small persons or people is the norm now. Especially after that singer made that song up about the short people. Everybody under 5'5" up and arms. When I heard the rest of song that he was actually fighting for the shorter people. I SAID THEY NEEDED TO LET THE PEOPLE HEAR THE REST OF THIS SONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You seldom hear the word midget these days. However, with the definition you have given, my daughter that is 20 and only 4'8", normal proportions, would be a midget. We have always said she was a dwarf.

Dwarfs have disproportionate body parts. I would not like to be reminded of, or have attention called to this fact.

My lady friend is a wonderfull person who is perfectly proportioned and just happens to be 4' 9" tall. Someone got in her face about being a "dwarf" and she was offended. She says "Midget" also carries a stigma from olden times but technically she is that and that doesn't bother her. She does find "little person" rather condesending. We met in Aikido classes where she has earned her hakima (Black Belt)and you should see what she can do to men are more than twice her weight and half again her height. The only real issue she has is she insists on wearing very high heels when we go dancing.

"midgets" generally do not have any physical issues with the exception of their short size.

It is a technical term and should not be thought of as derogatory

Midget seems to be used more often that Dwarf and is often thought that something went medically wrong, bringing a little sympathy. Dwarf brings to mind cartoon characters that are expected to be laughed at.

I am a midget and I will gladly refer to myself as such and I don't care if someone else does too. But when someone calls me a dwarf, I'm normally pretty angry about it. I do not think midget is an offensive word, but I'm normally pretty mad when someone mislabels me as a dwarf.
