I've just finished a 5 page paper on the subject! Last recorded natural infection of smallpox was in Somalia 1977. The last mandatory vaccination was in 1979!
There has been a smallpox vaccine for much longer period of time than the varicella vaccine. The only threat of smallpox is now in the threat from biological warfare, etc.

I have read some articles about smallpox. All of them state that WHO has officially eradicated the disease thru a worldwide vaccination programme.
It says so at the top of the article.
