I did an experiment in Honors Biology. It proves that Alka Seltzer works better.
It can neutralize more acid per weight compared to Tums.
When placed in water, the alka-seltzer creates a reaction between the citric acid and the sodium bicarbonate, dissolving these substances into their ionic states. This allows them to work faster in solution in the stomach, without having to be dissolved in the stomach, like Tums, for example.

I am 58 years old, I learned about Tums and Alka Seltzer from my dad. I hated the taste of Alka Seltzer the first couple times my parents suggested I use it (I was in my teens). For just heartburn, tums seems to get the job done. However; for that bloated feeling, nothing I have ever tried give the fast and long term relief of Alka Seltzer.

Alka Seltzer has the ability to keep the ph slightly higher, more basic for a longer period of time. This is called buffering. As your stomach tries to make more acid to olower the ph, it takes longer to for it to throw more protons (free protons are what drives the the ph down causing it to be more acidic) into the mix keeping your stomach at a more sustainable level. This is why I picked it. Having had to take both for acid reflux I have noticed that the rate of change in pain when taking Alka seltzer is almost instantaneous.
