Both the word cossack and Kazahk have Turkish roots possibly to the term that says they are "free men". Unification of Turkish tribes around Crimea & Eastern Europe seem to be in the area known as Ukraine. Most in this area adopted the Orthodox Christian beliefs that spoke the dialect of Old Church Slavonic that Cyril the monk combined the Greek alphabet with Slavic languages. Cyril was half Greek and half Slavic. Zaporozhian Cossacks were the dominant group.

Due to their history and it still is seen in their folk costumres and traditions, more than in Russia. Russia has cossacks, of course, but I believe that the main influence comes from the Ukraine.

Ukrainian history is much older than Russian. Kiev was a city before moscow was inhabited. The Dnieper river and its islands provided a great hiding place for men seeking freedom from serfdom. They developed their own culture.

For the first time cossacks appeared at the beginning of 15 century at the Middle Dnieper. Those were people who escaped from oppression of polish nobility or tried to organize selfdefence from tatars and turkish invasion. Actually, cossacks were ruthenians, who now are ukrainians, by nationality and they spoke pre-ukrainian language. Moreover they considered themselves as true descendants of Kyivan Rus'.
Then after more than one century later based on the example of cossacks from the Dnieper, some runaway people from the territory that controlled by Muscovite kingdom began to appear at the Don river. Later they began to call themselves as Don cossacks.

Actually, Kozaks appear in both Ukraine and Russia at about the same time, for all intents and purposes, they are of the same blood. The arrogance and cruelty of rulers separated them more than anything.
