The West does not really understand the concepts and practices of Buddhism, Chinese or Tibetan. The West sees Buddhism as a personal path to Enlightenment, which follows Chinese Buddhism's practices.

More Chinese immigrate to the US than Tibet...so westerners know more about them?

Because in my experience, as an American, If Americans do not know much about something they jump to stereotypes. Based on what I know about Chinese Buddhism, it seems to be the stereotype that is used in the west. That is why I chose Chinese Buddhism.

Tibetan Buddhism is better understood in the west because, as a result of the Chinese communists overrunning Tibet, many of the great masters and teachers have migrated to the west-USA, UK, Canada, Europe, free Asian countries, even Russia. They are faithfully preserving the great texts, and teaching to many western students. Certainly against their inital intentions, the CCP has caused the Dharma to spread throughout the world, and its followers to become much further and wider than they would ever wanted to see happen.
